A Local's Guide
Glebe Cottage sits around 10 miles — roughly a 20–25 minute drive — from Burford, the honey-stone market town often called the "Gateway to the Cotswolds", and its neighbouring Cotswold Wildlife Park.
If Burford's on your list, Glebe Cottage makes a quieter, more private base than staying in the town itself — a proper cottage with your own garden, a short drive from Burford's High Street and the wildlife park, and close to everything else the North Cotswolds has to offer.
Burford's High Street is the classic Cotswolds postcard: a broad, steep slope of golden stone buildings running down to a medieval bridge over the River Windrush. It's known for its long tradition of antiques shops and independent traders, alongside some excellent pubs and tearooms — a good spot for a wander, a browse, and a proper lunch.
The Tolsey Museum, housed in the town's Tudor Market and Court House, is worth a look too if you're curious about Burford's history as a wool and coaching town.
A couple of miles south of Burford itself, Cotswold Wildlife Park is set in around 160 acres of parkland surrounding a Victorian manor house, home to well over a thousand animals — rhinos, giraffes and big cats among them, alongside a walk-through lemur exhibit ("Madagascar"), penguins, reptiles, and a narrow-gauge railway. There's also a Skymaze adventure playground with treehouses and rope bridges for older children. It's a genuinely full day out, and one of the more popular family attractions in the area.
The Farmers Dog — the pub featured in Clarkson's Farm — is right on the way, at the Asthall Barrow Roundabout just outside Burford, easy to combine with a trip into town. Burford sits within easy reach of the rest of the North Cotswolds — Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Chipping Norton are all a short drive away, and Bibury and the Slaughters aren't much further if you'd rather see somewhere quieter on the same trip.
